The new normal has become a buzz term in recent times as the economy is set to be restructured. Organizational operations have been modified, alongside the management methods of staff. Remote work has become a rule rather than an exception.

Uncertainties abound during this crucial transition, where employers are required to adapt to a plethora of change — more rapidly than ever. The immediate future is likely to involve continuous paradigm shifts in workplace protocols and technology. Organizational leaders must be well-prepared to hold out for the coming storm.

The Proving Grounds of Leadership Resiliency

A resilient leader considers and optimizes multiple aspects of the workplace — from technological advances right up to the personal needs of staff. Also, the leader has to stay proactive regardless of the immediate challenges. It is easy to get lost in the circulation of counterproductive or worrying news, but leaders must stay motivated and inspire staff with that confidence.

The new normal requires leaders to re-evaluate the purpose of technology. Technology has traditionally been considered a substitution to human endeavor. However, this has been proven largely untrue during COVID season. Various industries have shown examples of staff working seamlessly with technology. Examples include food delivery, telemedicine, and e-commerce.

Instead, leaders should consider the supplementary role of technology. The built-in algorithms of programs are useful in executing complex computations and mundane tasks. However, human operation remains a key component in the delivery process. Leaders should continue to train their workforce in the relevant tech skills, to keep them ahead of the competition. Organizations should refocus their budget on tech training rather than fear the uprising of the A.I.

Additionally, leaders should consider the unique needs of each staff. They need to move away from the traditional viewpoint of employees being mere assets to a company. This means investing more time in identifying other lifestyle needs such as those of a parent or caregiver. Modern organizational leaders must care about the individual as much as the delivery of their tasks.

Predicting the Future

The future is always uncertain, however, organizations should consider viable possibilities. This will provide a stronger sense of direction and systematic business plans. Research firm Deloitte has outlined four likely post-COVID scenarios in the coming times based on a critical assessment of trends and uncertainties. These scenarios include The Passing Storm, Lone Wolves, Good Company, and Sunrise in the East.

The Passing Storm: Contained pandemic situation via strong governmental support, at the expense of SMBs and middle to lower-income entities.

Lone Wolves: Prolonged pandemic, resulting in isolationists policies that harm global trade and shorten existing supply chains.

Good Company: Governments require the support of large companies in the pandemic solution. This shapes the global economy into one dictated by stakeholder capitalism.

Sunrise in the East: East Asian nations such as China recover with greater success to gain greater power on the global stage. This creates a mass shift in business opportunities.

These scenarios are purely speculative and non-exhaustive possibilities. However, it is necessary for organizations to plan their long-term strategy set against a predicted world stage. Organizational leaders should involve all stakeholders in their discussion to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Digital Scalability

Remote work has resulted in the need for greater digital awareness and IT savviness. The future of work is likely to see a rise in flexible arrangements that thrive with improved digital literacy. This may result in increased use of Cloud systems, regular cyber hygiene talks, and additional support for work-ready homes.

Remote learning opportunities can enhance the overall work experience by driving self-development and skills training. This will encourage workers to fill the gaps in their work schedule with meaningful online lessons.

Additionally, reports show that virtual learning experiences during the COVID season have proven to be effective, with students retaining 25–60% more materials compared to traditional classroom sessions.
